The Govt.nz team have recently been finishing important work that will help deliver better information and services for users in 2020.

For over a decade, Govt.nz has been the secure, central, authoritative source for users seeking information about and direction to government services, whether that is simply finding up-to-date contact details for government or making an application for New Zealand citizenship.

Over this time Govt.nz has become the flagship website for government organisations as an accessible, usable service that meets both international standards, and those applicable to Aotearoa New Zealand. Supporting over 6.2 million sessions in 2019, Govt.nz is helping people find out more about their entitlements, guiding people through services that are relevant to them, so they get what they need.

Recently the Govt.nz team finished important work that will help deliver better information and services for users in 2020.

Building a better Govt.nz

The Govt.nz team have been building on their award-winning work of recent years and key achievements across 2019 included:

  • Rolling out a beta rates rebate tool, working with Service Innovation Lab and Councils across NZ
  • Integrating new citizenship information for users, helping those who want to apply to be citizens in NZ, making it easy, clear
  • Re-designing ‘Getting married’ information to align with legislative changes

Govt.nz 2020 roadmap

We are always listening to our users, and changing Govt.nz based on insights, feedback and testing, looking at what we need to do now to accommodate emerging needs.

Our 2020 workplan maps out some exciting work including:

  • Implementing integrated services across Govt.nz - ensuring information and services are optimised for users interacting with government
  • Using the Design System components across Govt.nz
  • Testing a Structured Content Model for government, making it easier for agencies to collaboratively publish and consume the same data source.

We are also currently rebuilding the Congratulatory Message form — improving the overall experience for users by:

  • simplifying user flows
  • following progressive enhancement principles
  • improving accessibility, validation and analytics tracking.

The form is being designed with re-use in mind and we will be adding it to the New Zealand Government Design System for anyone to use. This work will be done in the context of ongoing continuous improvement work across Govt.nz as it evolves.

Vision 2020

We look forward to the year ahead and playing a central role in building services that are inclusive and useful for all. Govt.nz will play an important role in the delivery of the Strategy for a Digital Public Service.

The problems our users face are varied and complex; the work we do solving those problems is as important as ever. We look forward to co-designing solutions with our users throughout 2020. Ka pai!
